vmi_logoA cause near and dear to the program, the VMI men’s lacrosse team raised over $8,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project during the 2014 season, setting a team record.

The 2014 effort raised a total of $8,011, surpassing the team’s previous mark of $6,750, set last season. Over the last five years, the Keydet lacrosse program has raised $26,743 for the Wounded Warrior Project.

This year, the Keydets chose a doubleheader weekend as VMI hosted University of Detroit Mercy and the United States Air Force Academy on March 1-2, respectively. The Keydets split the weekend, falling 8-6 against Detroit, but topping Air Force the next day 6-4, the program’s first win over a Division I Service Academy.

Each team playing that weekend wore Wounded Warrior Project shirts for shootaround with the team logo on the sleeve. The shirts were also made available for sale to the public as part of the fundraiser. Additionally, raffle tickets were sold for several items, including hats, a flat screen TV and an iPad.

Over the last five seasons, the Keydets have increased their total donation to the Project above the previous year. Since 2010, the Keydets, with help and support from the parents’ organization, average $5,348 per season to donate to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Wounded Warrior Project’s vision is to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history. Its purpose is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, help injured service members aid and assist each other and provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.
