Virginia State Police investigating fatal accident in Augusta County

policeAt 7:40 p.m., Friday (July 22, 2016), Virginia State Police responded to a vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 81 at the 207 mile marker.

A vehicle ran off the left side of the interstate into the median and overturned. There is one confirmed fatality.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The accident has closed the left northbound lane.  This location is between exit 205 at Route 606 at Raphine in Rockbridge County and exit 213 at Route 11 in Greenville in Augusta County.

The Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton Traffic Operations Center indicate the left lane will remain closed as work at the scene continues. At the onset of the crash both northbound lanes were closed causing a two-mile back up.

Motorists should expect significant delays in this area.
