Virginia State Police investigate serious crash on I-81 in Shenandoah County

Virginia State Police Trooper C.S. Peer is investigating a three-vehicle crash in Shenandoah County. The crash occurred Thursday at 7:20 a.m. on Interstate 81 at the 265.8 mile marker.

A 2019 Kia Forte was traveling south in I81 in the left lane when it struck a 2018 Harley F1HR, that was also traveling south. The Kia then struck a 2006 Land Rover in the right lane, ran off of the roadway right, and struck a tree.

The driver of the Kia, Robert A. Cruz, 29, of Shenandoah, Va., suffered serious injuries and was transported to Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Cruz was wearing a seat-belt.

The rider of the Harley, a 63 year old male from Southington, CT., suffered serious injuries and was flown to UVA Medical Center. The rider was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the Land Rover, a 50 year old male from Hagerstown, Md., and a passenger were not injured. Both occupants were wearing seat-belts.

Cruz was charged with reckless driving and driving suspended.

The crash remains under investigation.

Virginia State Police was assisted by VDOT, Shenandoah County Fire and EMS, Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, and the New Market Police Department.
