Virginia scores two in the ninth, takes series from Virginia Tech

virginia virginia techVirginia rallied from a late 5-2 deficit, scoring two runs in the eighth, then two more in the bottom of the ninth, to post a series-clinching 6-5 win over Virginia Tech on Sunday at Disharoon Park.

The ‘Hoos (18-14, 6-9 ACC) got a two-run single from leadoff man Tanner Morris, who was 3-for-5 on the day, to get to within 5-4 after eight.

Charlie Cody walked with one out in the ninth ahead of Brandon Rivoli, who lined a 2-0 pitch down the right-field line for a triple that plated Cody and tied the game at 5-5.

The next hitter, Cameron Comer, chopped an 0-2 pitch up the middle through a drawn-in infield to score Rivoli with the winning run.

Comer’s hit capped a 4-for-4 day for the junior at the plate.

Freshman Alex Tappan was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his first of the season, coming in the third inning.

Bennett Sousa (3-3) vultured the win in relief, getting the final out in the top of the ninth ahead of the rally in the bottom half of the inning.

Virginia went with a staff day approach to the Sunday matchup. Starter Grant Donahue put up two scoreless innings before being lifted.

Freshman Andrew Abbott went three and a third innings, giving up two runs on five hits, striking out five.

Joey Sullivan (0-3) took the loss for Virginia Tech (13-17, 6-9 ACC).
