quiltThe Virginia Quilt Museum opens its 2015 exhibit season on Feb. 3 featuring quilts by internationally-known fabric designer Jinny Beyer of Great Falls, Va.

This world-renown quilter, teacher, author and designer uses color choice and intricately cut geometric pieces of fabric to create quilts that appear to glow and move. Her famous quilt RAY OF LIGHT was judged as one of the 100 best of the 20th century. Also exhibited will be selections from Beyer’s collection of unique and exquisite antique quilts. The antiques have provided inspiration for her own fabric designs. Beyer is one of Virginia’s best known quilters and enjoys integrating the art and history of quilting. This exhibit is sponsored by RJR Fabrics and thread maker Aurifil USA and will run through April 25.

LECTURE: Feb. 22 Beyer will present a program and lecture in Harrisonburg about designing fabrics from inspiration to finished yardage. See the museum’s website for details www.vaquiltmuseum.org. Tickets for the lecture and artists’ reception may be purchased online or by calling the museum.

ART QUILTS inspired by colorful embroidered Guatemalan weavings called Huipils in another exhibit were created by members of the Textile Artists of Virginia (TAVA), a fiber artists group from Rockbridge County and southwest Virginia. Usually woven on a back-strap loom, Huipils are traditional tunic-like garments worn by indigenous women from Central Mexico to Central America. Weaving designs, color scheme, and motifs on the front, back, and shoulders can identify a Mayan women from a certain community. Each quilt in the TAVA exhibit was inspired by a certain Huipil and each artists’ travels and personal experience influenced her work further. Huipils will be displayed through
Mar. 28.

ANTIQUES: Rounding out the exhibition will be the “Treasures from the Vault: Stornetta Family Legacy” antique and vintage quilts from the museum’s collection. Always on display are Civil War era quilts from among the museum’s collection of more than 300 quilts made by Virginians. The museum celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year and will feature special events all year long.
