Virginia outlasts Miami, 73-68, advances to ACC Tournament final

virginia basketball#4 Virginia took control with a 13-4 second-half run, then sweated out a 73-68 win over #11 Miami Friday night in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.

The Cavs (26-6, 15-5 ACC) advance to the tournament final on Saturday night at 9 p.m. against top seed North Carolina (27-6, 16-4 ACC).

UVA led by as many as 11 in the first half, but Miami closed the half on a 6-0 run to go into the break down 36-31.

An Angel Rodriguez three cut the lead to three at 42-39 with 13:52 to go, and it was still four, at 50-46, at the 8:27 mark when a Malcolm Brogdon hard drive to the basket ignited what seemed to be the game-breaking run.

A pair of free throws by Anthony Gill with 3:10 left pushed the lead to 63-50, but the ‘Canes would get back into it.

A Davon Reed three cut the margin to five at 69-64 with 38 seconds left, and a pair of missed free throws by London Perrantes with 13 seconds left with Virginia up 71-66 left the door open.

Miami dawdled on its final possession, finally getting a tip-in by Anthony Lawrence with three seconds left to cut the deficit to three.

UVA inbounded to Brogdon, who iced the game with 2.1 seconds left with a pair of free throws.

Brogdon had a game-high 24 to lead the Cavs, who shot 52 percent (26-of-50) from the field.

Miami got 19 points from Ja’Quan Newton.
