VDOT: Making progress with snow still falling, but most roads still covered

snow011708picRoads throughout the Shenandoah Valley are snow-covered shortly before mid-day Thursday. Snowfall totals range from 10 to 18 inches, and additional accumulation is expected this afternoon. Interstate and primary routes are passable, but most secondary roads have not yet been plowed. The Virginia Department of Transportation advises motorists to avoid non-emergency travel.

The VDOT Staunton District has about 1,000 pieces of equipment deployed to plow and treat roads. Crews will remain on 12-hour shifts throughout the storm and as needed after the storm is concluded.

Here are the detailed conditions as of 11 a.m.:

  • Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.
  • Interstate 66 – Moderate conditions in Warren County.
  • Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.
  • Primary roads – Severe to moderate conditions in Augusta and Rockingham counties. Moderate conditions in Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.
  • Secondary roads – Severe conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clark and Warren counties.

For winter weather road conditions go to www.511Virginia.org, look at the orange bar on the top of the page and click on “Text Views” and then click on “Road Condition Table”. Look at the pull down box that lists all jurisdictions. In this box individual counties can be chosen to view.

For other assistance call the VDOT Customer Service Center, available 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week.
