VDOT: Be alert for black ice tonight, Thursday

vdot winter weather snowCrews with the VDOT Culpeper District will be on duty to watch for refreezing of melted snow and slush, and treat roads with salt and sand as needed.

Motorists should delay Thursday morning travel if possible, checking road conditions before leaving home. Once on the road, drivers must stay alert for patches of black ice, especially on bridges, overpasses and ramps and in shaded areas. Reduce speeds, do not tailgate and allow plenty of time to reach your destination.

VDOT crews remain actively engaged in snow operations. Their main focus is pushing back excess snow on secondary roads so they are opened to full width. Additional cleanup is being done on higher-volume routes to expose shoulders and turn lanes and improve the line of sight at intersections.

Road conditions and other real-time travel information can be found on the 511 Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia. Local updates are also on the district’s Twitter account, @VaDOTCulp.
