UVA’s Anthony Harris named to Walter Camp Watch List
UVA strong safety Anthony Harris was named a “player to watch” by the Walter Camp Football Foundation for its 2014 Player of the Year award, the nation’s fourth-oldest individual college football accolade.
Named to the second-team on the 2013 Walter Camp All-America team, Harris (Sr., Chesterfield, Va.) is one of 10 players on the 50-man preseason watch list to have previously earned Walter Camp All-America accolades in their career. Harris is a preseason All-American after also earning All-America honors in 2013 from Sports Illustrated (first). Harris has also been named to the preseason Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, the preseason Bednarik Award Watch List and the preseason Jim Thorpe Award Watch List. Harris led the nation with eight interceptions and set a UVa record with at least one interception in five straight games. CFPA listed Harris on its preseason 42-man watch list for its defensive back of the year.
“We are proud to continue the great work of Walter Camp and recognize the best college football players in the nation,” Foundation president James Monico said. “This watch list is a great start to what is shaping up to be another exciting year of college football.”
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in mid-November. The 2014 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 125 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, Dec. 11. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet on Jan. 17, 2015 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
Please note: Appearing on the preseason Watch List is not a requirement for a player to win the Walter Camp award or be named to the All-American team.
