The Virginia women’s basketball team dropped a 73-56 contest to No. 8 Maryland on Thursday (Feb. 16) at John Paul Jones Arena. Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 23 points as UVa’s high-scorer.

The loss dropped Virginia’s record to 18-9 overall and 6-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The eighth-ranked Terrapins improved to 22-4 (9-4 ACC).

Moorer’s 23 points were one shy of her career-high. She also added a team-high five steals and five rebounds.

Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) was the other Cavaliers in double figures for scoring, finishing with 10 points and five rebounds.

Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) added eight points and four rebounds.

Terrapin forwards Tianna Hawkins (26 points, 14 rebounds) and Alyssa Thomas (16 points, 10 rebounds) finished with double-doubles forMaryland.

The Terrapins won the battle of the boards and out-rebounded the Cavaliers 53-26.

Virginia faced its largest halftime deficit of the year, 23 points, when it trailed 44-21.

After missing her first seven shots, Franklin connected on a baseline jumper at the 19:16 mark of the second half for her first field goal.

Virginia cut the Maryland lead to 11 points with an 8-0 run in the second half. Moorer’s lay-up at the 9:07 mark made the score 57-46, but Maryland countered with a 10-0 run of its own to take a 67-46 lead and close the door on Virginia.

Maryland swept the regular-season series with UVa for the first time since the 2007-08 season, as the Terrapins were victorious in College Park, 68-61, on Jan. 16.

The Cavaliers hit the road on Sunday (Feb. 19) for a 2 p.m. contest at in-state and ACC rival Virginia Tech.
