The Cavaliers host Arkansas, Marshall, Northwestern, South Carolina and VCU at the UVa Invite in their only fall event on Oct. 10-12 at Snyder Tennis Center.

The Cavaliers will host Syracuse (Feb. 21), Boston College (Feb. 22), Florida State (March 8), Miami (March 27), Wake Forest (March 29), Virginia Tech (April 18) and NC State (April 19). UVa travels to Pittsburgh (Feb. 27), Notre Dame (March 1), Clemson (March 20), Duke (March 22), Louisville (April 4), North Carolina (April 10) and Georgia Tech (April 12).

In 2013-14, the Cavaliers captured their first ACC regular season and tournament championships and made their first NCAA quarterfinal appearance in school history en route to a school-best 24-6 record. All-American Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and reigning NCAA singles champion Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) return from last season’s squad. McCarthy fires 68 in opening round of World Amateur Team Championship: Virginia senior men’s golfer Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) shot 4-under 68 to help Team USA finish the first day of play at the World Amateur Team Championships tied for sixth place. The 69-team tournament is taking place in Karuizawa, Japan.

McCarthy went bogey-free during his opening round to help Team USA finish the day at 8-under 136. Texas sophomore Beau Hossler also shot 68 while SMU junior Bryson DeChambeau shot 69.

In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team’s score for the championship.

Canada, Sweden and Switzerland led the tournament at 10-under 134. The Swiss team includes 2014 UVa graduate Ben Rusch, who shot 68.

“I kept my card clean,” McCarthy said. “Anytime you can go bogey-free, it is a pretty solid day. I holed a lot of nice putts. It’s easy to be too aggressive here. But if you have the numbers you can attack. If you are between clubs, it’s time to be more conservative.”

“It’s an excellent start with 2 4-unders and 1 3-under,” said Team USA captain Jim Hyler. “We left some shots out there and we didn’t play particularly well on the par 5s. But overall, it was a really good start.”
