UVA outfielder Joe McCarthy sidelined following back surgery

uva baseballUVA starting outfielder Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) will miss approximately 12 weeks after undergoing back surgery Thursday.

A 2014 Preseason All-American, McCarthy started all 69 games last season, batting .301 with six home runs and 49 RBI. He led the team with 16 doubles and 11 stolen bases and was one off the team lead with 77 hits.

During his two seasons at UVa, McCarthy is a .317 batter with 152 hits in 129 games.

Virginia opens its season Feb. 13 with a three-game series at East Carolina. The Cavaliers’ home opener is slated for Feb. 17 against VCU.
