UVa. led by 19 at the half, and had to withstand a late second half Florida State run, to post a 78-66 win over the Seminoles in ACC action on Saturday in Charlottesville.

uva fsuVirginia (13-5, 4-1 ACC) led big from the outset, getting out in front 20-8 nine minutes in and leading 45-26 at the half.

The lead stayed in the 20-point range for the bulk of the second half until Florida State (12-5, 3-2 ACC) went on a 10-1 run that brought the ‘Noles to within 12 at 69-57, but a Joe Harris three with 2:32 to go pushed the lead back to 15, and FSU never threatened thereafter.

The difference in the game was turnovers. Florida State shot an impressive 45.7 percent from the floor, but committed 18 turnovers to UVa.’s nine, and the ‘Hoos had a 26-9 advantage in points off turnovers.

The game ended with two ugly scrums. After a Justin Anderson alley-oop dunk with 18.6 seconds left, Anderson was assessed for a questionable technical foul for hanging on the rim. As FSU was shooting the free throws, FSU’s Okaro White instigated a shoving match with UVa.’s London Perrantes. Both were assessed technical fouls, and UVa.’s Teven Jones and Darion Atkins were ejected for leaving the bench area during the scrum that ensued.

After the game, several unidentified Florida State players instigated another shoving match in the handshake line.

Harris led Virginia with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Malcolm Brogdon had 16 points, Mike Tobey had 13, and Justin Anderson had 10 off the bench for the ‘Hoos.

Virginia shot 49.1 percent from the field and a blistering 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from three-point range.

White and Aaron Thomas led FSU with 15 points each.

UVa. returns to ACC action on Monday at 7 p.m. at the John Paul Jones Arena against North Carolina.
