UVA swimmer Leah Smith finishes sixth in 800m freestyle final

uva leah smithUVA swimming rising senior Leah Smith finished sixth in the 800m freestyle final on Friday night (Aug. 12) at the Rio Olympics.

Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) touched the wall in a time of 8:20.95, which bettered her preliminary time of 8:21.43. Smith finished her three events with two medals. She earned bronze in the 400m freestyle on Sunday before winning gold with the United States 4×200-meter freestyle relay on Wednesday.

The University of Virginia has 25 overall Olympic medals across all sports, including 15 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals.

At Virginia, Smith is a four-time NCAA Champion, winning the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events in both 2015 and 2016. She is an 11-time All-American and 10-time ACC Champion.
