UVA golfers McCarthy and Bard near top of leaderboard at U.S. Amateur

uva-logo-new2Virginia senior men’s golfer Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) is tied for fifth and sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) is in 15th place after the opening round of play at the 114th U.S. Amateur Championships taking place in Johns Creek, Ga. Playing on the par-72 Atlanta Athletic Club Riverside Course, McCarthy shot 3-under 69. Bard, playing the par-71 Highlands Course, shot 2-under 69.

Incoming UVA freshman Austen Truslow (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) shot 3-over 74 on the Highlands Course and is tied for 137th place.

Jimmy Beck of Columbus, Ga., and Sam Horsfield of England, shared the opening round lead at 6-under.

After 36 holes of stroke play, the field of 312 competitors will be cut to the low 64 scorers. Six rounds of match play begin on Aug. 13 and the championship concludes with a scheduled 36-hole championship match on Aug. 17.
