UVA Football Inside the Numbers: Was it really that bad? Yeah

uva boise statePick-Six Fever: Matt Johns had an interception returned for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. David Watford, now at Hampton, threw a pick-six on the first play from scrimmage in a 45-26 loss at Miami in 2013.

That one came six seconds into the game. The Johns INT came 14 seconds into the game.

(A defensive tackle rumbled the Johns pick in, helping account for the difference.)

Another Johns pass was returned for a TD in the third quarter. Two Pick-Sixes: first time that happened to a UVA quarterback since Greyson Lambert had two in the second quarter in the season opener against UCLA in 2014.

These kinds of things are a bit too common, sadly.

Still can’t run: Virginia ran 33 times for 40 yards Friday night. Four of the runs were sacks, for 16 yards in losses, so take those out, you get 29 runs for 56 yards.

One of the runs was a Johns 10-yard scramble. Albert Reid gained eight yards on a meaningless carry on the final play of the first half.

Take those out, you get 27 rushes for 38 yards.

One-point-four yards per carry either way you look at it.

True freshmen: UCLA true freshman quarterback Josh Rosen made his first career start look like a seven-on-seven drill, going 28-for-35 passing for 351 yards, three touchdowns and a 192.5 passer rating in a 34-16 win.

Boise State true freshman Brett Rypien put up similar numbers in his first career start, going 24-for-35 passing for 321 yards, three touchdowns and a 173.9 passer rating.

Turnover woes: The Virginia D still has yet to force a turnover through four games. The offense committed five on Friday night, four interceptions and a third-quarter fumble by Taquan Mizzell, leading to 27 Boise State points.

Virginia’s first four opponents have scored 37 points off UVA’s nine total turnovers. Virginia, obviously, hasn’t scored any points off opponent turnovers.

A stat that we won: Virginia had the ball for 31:55 to Boise State’s 28:05.
