UVa. football coach Mike London quietly names Greyson Lambert starting QB

Mike-LondonUVa. football head coach Mike London released his depth chart for the upcoming 2014 season, and in so doing made it public that sophomore Greyson Lambert will be his starting quarterback.

Lambert beat out last year’s starter, David Watford, and fellow sophomore Matt Johns for the nod.

Lambert threw for 220 yards in the Virginia spring game in April and led his team on a geme-winning touchdown drive in the final minutes. As a freshman, Lambert completed 44 percent of his pass attempts (33-of-75) for 340 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in mop-up duty.

Watford, a junior, completed 57.1 percent of his passes (244-of-427) for 2,202 yards and eight touchdowns with 15 interceptions in 12 starts. Virginia went 2-10 in 2013.

London named Lambert to his team leadership council coming out of spring practice, and pointedly did not include Watford in that grouping.

Another player who was named to the leadership council in the spring, Jake McGee, a tight end/wide receiver, announced recently that he will not be returning for his redshirt senior season. McGee, last year’s leading receiver with 43 catches, will be graduating from UVa. this month and intends to transfer, and will be eligible to play immediately wherever he ends up.
