cassius peatUVA football is adding Scottsdale Community College defensive lineman Cassius Peat (Chandler, Ariz.), who has announced he will transfer to Virginia for his final two years of eligibility.

Peat originally enrolled at Michigan State in 2015. During his first season at MSU he redshirted as the Spartans went on to win the Big Ten championship and make an appearance in the College Football Playoff. He plans on enrolling at Virginia this summer and will be able to play immediately for the Cavaliers.

Peat spent the 2016 season on the roster at Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz., before transferring to Scottsdale Community College for the 2017 season. Peat appeared in two games for Scottsdale Community College in 2017, making four tackles. 247Sports ranks Peat the No. 4 defensive end in the junior college ranks.

Peat went to Michigan State after graduating in 2015 from Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Ariz., where he was ranked the No. 1 defensive end prospect in the state and No. 4 defensive end in the West Region by Scout.com. Peat recorded 45 tackles, including four sacks, and seven quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles as a senior in 2014. He was also a four-year letterwinner in basketball and became the first player in Arizona high school history to win four consecutive state titles at the Division I level. During his senior season at Corona del Sol, Peat was basketball teammates with former Duke All-American Marvin Bagley III, who was a freshman.

Peat is the son of Todd Peat, a former NFL offensive lineman who spent three seasons with the St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals, and three seasons with the Los Angeles Raiders. His father also played collegiately at Northern Illinois. Peat’s old brother, Andrus, was an All-American offensive tackle at Stanford and now plays for the New Orleans Saints. His other brother, Todd, was a defensive lineman for Texas A&M-Commerce in 2014 and 2015.
