UVA finishes Spain tour unbeaten at 5-0

uva basketballThe UVA men’s basketball team recorded a pair of wins over the Sant Julià All-Stars to finish its tour of Spain unbeaten at 5-0.

Virginia defeated Sant Julià 72-62 on Tuesday (Aug. 16) and 85-49 on Wednesday (Aug. 17). Both games were played at Pavelló Esportiu Municipal.

In Tuesday’s 72-62 win, London Perrantes scored 12 of his game-high 14 points in the second half to lead the Cavaliers. Jarred Reuter added 13 points and Kyle Guy tallied all 12 of his points in the second half.

Jack Salt scored all five of his points in the first quarter, but UVA trailed 19-18. Jay Huff nailed a 3-pointer and Mamadi Diakite’s dunk tied the score at 32-32 at halftime.

Perrantes and Guy ignited UVA’s rally in the third quarter. Perrantes had eight points and Guy had five points as the Cavaliers gained a 52-45 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

UVA finished the game on a 6-0 run on a Huff dunk and pair of buckets from Perrantes. Isaiah Wilkins, Darius Thompson and Marial Shayok did not play in the game for UVA.

Roger Fornas lead Sant Julià with 12 points and Josep Franch and Marc Branch added 10 points each.

In Wednesday’s 85-49 win, Austin Nichols led four Cavaliers in double figures with 14 points. De’Andre Hunter added 11 points and Shayok and Reuter each recorded 10 points.

Shayok tallied six points and Ty Jerome added four points as UVA led 19-14 after the first quarter.

UVA outscored Sant Julià 24-15 in the second quarter as Reuter, Hunter and Nichols had four points each.

The Cavaliers built their lead to 20 points at 51-31 when Thompson dunked in traffic and Hall’s 3-pointer gave UVA a commanding 66-38 lead after three quarters.

Huff and Hunter tallied six points each and Jerome nailed a 3-pointer in UVA’s 19-point fourth quarter. Diakite tallied nine points in the game and Huff added eight. Perrantes, Guy and Salt sat out the contest. Fornas led Sant Julià with 17 points.

Notes: Nichols led the Cavs in scoring during the tour at 13 ppg. Guy averaged 10.3 points and Perrantes chipped in 10 ppg. Hunter was the lone Cavalier to play all five games of the tour. UVA also defeated the Madrid Generals (92-81 & 78-76) and Arcos Albacete (70-44). UVA is now 15-7 in four European tours since 1996. UVA posted a 2-3 record on a trip to The Netherlands, Belgium and France in August of 2012. UVA went 3-3 on a tour of Belgium and France in August of 1996 and 5-1 on a trip to Germany, Belgium and France in August of 2000.
