darion atkinsUVA basketball senior Darion Atkins has apologized to teammates and coaches for critical comments to reporters after the Cavs’ upset loss to Michigan State on Sunday in the NCAA Tournament.

“I would like to apologize for my inappropriate comments to the media in Charlotte. I let my emotions get the best of me during the NCAA Tournament and I did not intend to offend anyone. In hindsight I wish I had used more appropriate words to express myself,” Atkins said in a statement released by the sports media relations office at UVA.

Atkins answered a reporter who asked about the team’s poor play early in the second half leading to a UVA timeout that he felt like the Cavs “were just playing like some pussies.” He answered another question about whether he felt like he was “alone out there at times” playing hard in the affirmative, saying, “yeah, I felt like I wanted it more than a few other guys on the team. I felt like I tried to rally everyone together and bring everyone together in the second half than the first half. It was just a little bit too late to get things going.”

Atkins had 10 points and 14 rebounds in the 60-54 loss.

“I’ve met with my teammates and coaches to express my remorse for this unfortunate situation. I want everyone to know that I care so much about this program, and I hope this does not become a distraction from all that we were able to accomplish this year,” Atkins said.
