UVA baseball announces changes to fall ball schedule

uva-logo-new2The UVA baseball team’s 2014 Orange and Blue World Series begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Davenport Field. The seven-game intrasquad series runs through Oct. 18.

Two schedule changes have been announced for the series. The ring ceremony for the 2014 NCAA runner-up team, originally scheduled for Oct. 18, has been moved up one day to Friday, Oct. 17, prior to Game 6. In addition, the start time for Game 7 on Oct. 18 is now TBA, pending the announcement of the game time for the Virginia-Duke football game.

The Cavaliers have been divided into two teams for the Orange and Blue World Series. Brandon Waddell and Daniel Pinero will captain the Orange team, while Nathan Kirby and Robbie Coman will serve as captains for the Blue squad.

The series will consist of seven games. All games will be either nine or seven innings, which will be determined prior to each game.

The seven games will be broken up into two three-game series (Games 1-3 and Games 4-6 are separate series) as well as a stand-alone Game 7. If a given team wins the first two games of either series, the third game of that series will be played based on run differential of the first two games to allow the trailing team a chance to still win the series. Each team is encouraged to score as many runs as possible and not worry about running up the score.

There is no admission charge for any of Virginia’s exhibition games or Orange and Blue World Series contests. Free parking will be available in the University Hall lot. Fans should plan to enter Davenport Field for all fall games along the first-base line and not the main gate. The best route to reach this entrance is by using the road adjacent to the Lannigan Field track complex.

Virginia owns the most wins in Division I baseball over the last six seasons with 298, making three trips to the College World Series in that span. Virginia returns 14 letterwinners from the national runner-up team and welcomes 13 newcomers to the program this season.
