Head football coach Danny Rocco has announced redshirt-freshman quarterback Michael Strauss will transfer from the University of Virginia and has enrolled at the University of Richmond, effective with Monday’s start of the spring semester.

“We are very excited to announce the signing of transfer quarterback Michael Strauss out of Miami, Florida,” said Rocco.  “Michael was in a quarterback battle at the University of Virginia before deciding to transfer at the end of the semester.  This addition will offer us another option at the quarterback position heading into spring football. The competition will benefit all the quarterbacks in our program and I am excited to evaluate their progress.”

Strauss joins the Spiders after two years in coach Mike London’s program in Charlottesville. The Key Biscayne, Fla., native redshirted for the Cavaliers in 2010 and did not see action as a redshirt freshman in 2011.

A highly touted quarterback out of Gulliver Prep in the Miami area, Strauss was ranked the country’s No. 42 quarterback by Rivals.com and the No. 74 quarterback by ESPN.com in 2009. After leading his team to a state championship as a junior, he threw for 2,714 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior en route to being named a Class 2A All-State first-team selection and a Miami Herald first-team All-Dade County 3A-1B honoree. He closed out his illustrious prep career as the school’s all-time yards (6,650) and touchdowns (62) leader.

Strauss will be available for the Spiders’ spring practice session and will have three years of athletic eligibility.
