UR Football: 2011 season to open at Duke

For the second time in as many seasons, the University of Richmond is set for six home football games on campus at Robins Stadium as the Spiders have announced their 2011 schedule. The 11-game slate opens Sept. 3 at Duke.

In addition to the 2011 regular-season schedule, Richmond also announced the annual Spring Game will be played Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m. at Robins Stadium.

Following the opener at the ACC’s Blue Devils — an opponent the Spiders have defeated in their last two visits to Wallace Wade Stadium — Richmond is home for three-consecutive tilts at Robins Stadium.

The Spiders’ home-opener is set for Sept. 10 versus Wagner. The following week, the long-time rivalry with VMI is renewed (Sept. 17) and a week later New Hampshire is in town for the CAA Football opener (Sept. 24) on Family Weekend.

Away games at James Madison (Oct. 1) and Towson (Oct. 8 ) precede Richmond’s bye week (Oct. 15).

Maine (Oct. 22) and Massachusetts (Oct. 29) are each at Robins Stadium on the heels of the bye week, with back-to-back road games at Old Dominion (Nov. 5) and Delaware (Nov. 12) to follow. The game versus Maine is Richmond’s Homecoming Weekend.

The 2011 regular-season finale versus William & Mary and the 121st playing of the “South’s Oldest Football Rivalry” is slated for Nov. 19 at Robins Stadium. The Spiders are looking to win back the Capital Cup, after the Tribe snapped Richmond’s five-game winning streak this past season.

Game times and television will be announced at a later date.

Under first-year head coach Latrell Scott, Richmond (6-5, 4-4) limped its way through an injury-plagued 2010 campaign but still was in playoff contention on the season’s final weekend. The Spiders, who won the 2008 National Championship, missed the playoffs for the first time since 2006 but posted the sixth-consecutive winning season — the longest streak at Richmond since seven-straight winning campaigns in the 1920s.
