University of Virginia Health System and Humana Inc., one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies, have reached an agreement that provides Humana members in-network access to UVA hospitals, physicians and clinics in Charlottesville, Culpeper and throughout Central Virginia.
The new network agreement, which will be effective on or before January 1, 2016, includes all of Humana’s Medicare Advantage plans and Humana’s Commonwealth Coordinated Care Plan for those eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.
Humana Medicare Advantage membership has grown in Central Virginia in recent years, now including 10,000 members in the region and 140,000 across Virginia. With UVA’s leading cancer, orthopedics, nephrology and diabetes/endocrinology programs, officials expect Humana members from across the Commonwealth to access care at UVA.
“We are pleased that more patients both here in Central Virginia and across Virginia will have access to our high-quality care and excellent team of healthcare providers,” said Pamela M. Sutton-Wallace, Chief Executive Officer of UVA Medical Center.
Humana members will have in-network access to UVA Health System, which includes more than 800 physicians and clinicians representing 20 medical specialties providing care in more than 100 clinics across the region.
“Our membership has been growing here in Central Virginia,” said Neil Steffens, Virginia President for Humana’s Senior Products. “Expanding our network to include UVA Health System gives our members an even stronger network of world-class doctors and hospitals to choose from.”
Medicare Advantage is an increasingly popular alternative to traditional Medicare, with 17 million members in the U.S. They offer hospital, medical and prescription drug coverage all in one plan. Many Medicare Advantage plans also offer benefits and services not available on traditional Medicare, including health coaching, wellness programs, chronic illness assistance and others.
“Medicare open enrollment ends Dec. 7,” said Steffens, “Anyone over 65 years old should take the time to explore all their health plan options available through Medicare. We recommend folks start early by checking out Medicare.gov. It’s a great site, full of useful information. We also offer some fantastic tools and information at Humana.com.”
