Virginia State Police responded to a fatal crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 near the 220 mile marker in Augusta County, Wednesday (June 11). Virginia State Police were notified of the crash at approximately 8:06 a.m. Trooper M.C. Brill is investigating the crash.
Two tractor-trailers were traveling southbound, both in the right lane, when the first tractor-trailer slowed for traffic. According a preliminary report, a second tractor-trailer, immediately behind the first, failed to slow and struck the first tractor-trailer from behind. The impact caused the second tractor-trailer to jackknife. The driver died at the scene. He has been identified as Bryan P. Ingalls, 55, of Manchester, N.H.
The driver of the first tractor-trailer was not injured, but the crash caused the trailer to spill its contents. The trailer was carrying drums of liquid chocolate which ruptured in the crash.
All southbound lanes were shutdown and traffic was diverted off I-81 at Exit 220. All lanes were re-opened shortly after 3 p.m.
Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
The Virginia State Accident Reconstruction Team and Motor Carrier Unit are assisting Trooper Brill with the crash which remains under investigation.
