Traffic shift planned Nov. 4 on Rt. 29 widening project

route 29The widening of Route 29 between Route 643 (Polo Grounds Road) and Hollymead Town Center will enter a new phase on Nov. 4 when southbound traffic is shifted to the west so reconstruction of the northbound lanes can begin.

The southbound traffic switch is the next phase in the project to reconstruct and widen the 1.8-mile-long section to six lanes between Route 1719 (Towncenter Drive) and Polo Grounds Road. Once southbound traffic is moved to the west the tie-in points for the northbound lanes will be built on the pavement where southbound traffic was traveling. In early December northbound traffic will be shifted to the pavement in the median so the existing northbound lanes can be rebuilt and a multi-use path constructed to the east of the travel lanes.

Motorists traveling south on Route 29 late Friday evening, Nov.4 and early Saturday morning, Nov. 5 should anticipate brief delays due to the traffic shift. The switch should be complete by 6 a.m. and drivers using Route 29 on Saturday morning should be alert for signs and other traffic controls directing them onto the new pavement. The speed limit through the work zone is 40 mph at all times. Inclement weather Friday night will postpone the operation until early the following week.

The Route 29 widening project is one of eight Route 29 Solutions highway projects to improve safety and increase mobility along the Route 29 corridor in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Information about upcoming lane closures and other traffic impacts, as well as news about the projects, is posted on the Route 29 Solutions web site on the News and Traffic Alerts page.

The contractor for the three design-build projects: Rio Road intersection, Route 29 widening and the Berkmar Drive extension has a toll-free telephone number for residents to call regarding questions or issues related to those projects.

Calls to the number, 844-220-5540, will be returned by Lane-Corman Joint Venture staff within one business day.
