Tips from Bear Creek: Deck railing and porch screening

bear creekThere are many options to sort through with deck projects. A middle road that works out well for some people, according to Brian Mininger at Bear Creek, is to upgrade the railing and screening.

“In Virginia, sometimes we get not-so-nice weather during the spring, summer and fall seasons, the nice-weather seasons, and it would be great to be able to close things off to be able to enjoy your porch, and also to protect it as much as possible from the elements,” said Mininger, who has worked in the construction business for more than 20 years, and with his wife, Victoria, launched Bear Creek, with locations in Waynesboro and Charlottesville, in 2016.

It can be as simple as installing a V series screening system from Living Space, as Bear Creek did for one client on a recent project.

“If it’s a cooler day, and you want to keep it a little warmer on the porch, you can do that. If it’s windy, and you don’t want your stuff blowing everywhere, you can close a section. You can lift it up from the bottom so that you only have the top block. These also provides some sun filtering as well,” Mininger said.

The effect is to create a porch that functions as a three-seasons room.
