It’s a dead heat in Virginia between Barack Obama and John McCain.

That’s the rendering of a Rasmussen Reports poll of 500 Virginia voters released today. The poll, conducted on Wednesday, had Obama and McCain each drawing 44 percent of the votes of those surveyed.

The Rasmussen poll had Obama with a slight 45 percent-to-44 percent lead last month. McCain led Obama by 11 points in the Rasmussen poll done in March.

Looking inside the numbers, McCain currently leads Obama among independent voters by a 46 percent-to-36 percent margin. McCain also leads among white voters by a 52 percent-to-36 percent gap, while Obama is pulling 90 percent of the African-American vote.

McCain leads in one other significant category – voter favorability. McCain was viewed favorably by 64 percent of those surveyed, with Obama viewed favorably by 52 percent.
