baseballAs you imagine, the injury rosters at this time of year in major league baseball can have a significant impact not only on each team’s chances of making it into the playoffs but on a player’s ability to take part in post-season play and of being traded. Whether you understand the injury reports or not, they can have a dramatic impact on a team’s ability to win. Here are some of the key players sitting on the injured reserve list and their status.

California Angels Pitcher Shohei Ohtani – Out with a Grade 2 ulnar collateral ligament sprain since the June 8th game, he is expected to return in the Angels next game against the Astros. While Ohtani has not been on the mound since June 6th, he has been playing as a designated hitter since July 3rd. On Monday the August 27th, he pumped out fifty pitches during a simulated game, following which he said he was ready to play and only needed the approval of his coaches and trainers.

New York Yankees – Currently, the Yankees have no less than four players out with injuries. Aaron Judge is still out with a fractured right wrist, he ran the bases on Thursday at Yankee Stadium but is still unable to hold or swing a bat. Gary Sanchez has been out with a right groin strain but may soon be back in the lineup along with Didi Gregorius who has a bruised left heel. Meanwhile, Clint Frazier who has been out with post-concussion migraines is currently playing but in the minor leagues.

St. Louis Cardinals – Meanwhile the Cardinals are also suffering under the loss of three players to injuries. Michael Wacha has been cleared to return to the Double-A Springfield team after throwing 52 pitches on Tuesday. It is hoped he will be able to return to his rehabilitation assignment sometime next week. Marcell Ozuna, who has been out with an inflamed right shoulder was seen in the batting cages on Thursday and feels very good about where he is at in his recovery. He may be reactivated in the next couple of days. Out with a strained left groin, Jeff Gyorko has some good news following an MRI on Thursday. The MRI showed the injury was not as serious as it seemed, and he may be back sooner than expected. He may be taken off the DL on September 8th.

Seattle Mariners – Like the Cards, the Mariners are currently down three players. James Paxton suffered a neck strain recently. But after throwing an “aggressive” flat-ground catches session on Thursday, he is “ready to come off the 10-day DL list in time for Saturday’s game against the A’s, but the Mariners are still waiting to see how well he is progressing. Mario Gonzales was grudgingly placed on the 10-day DL following a neck strain. Jean Segura is out currently with a bruised shin suffered during the last game in the series against the Padres. According to team manager Scott Servais, depending on how quickly Gonzales recovers, the team may go to a six-man rotation.

Injuries have always been the bane of MLB and those who choose to wager on the games. While they do not affect the difference between American betting odds and other types, knowing all about them on a daily basis can be the difference between winning and failing to capitalize on your “investments.”
