The Citadel defeats VMI 3-2 in 10 innings

vmi baseballDespite a late rally from the VMI baseball team, The Citadel defeated the Keydets 3-2 in 10 innings Sunday in a Southern Conference game.

Down to their last out and trailing 2-1, the Keydets rallied to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Callen Nuccio doubled down the right field line to bring in pinch runner Jordan Ebersole and make the score 2-2. Ryan Smoot had been hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. The Citadel’s Andrew Judkins brought home the winning run with a one-out single in the 10th.

Junior right-hander Zak Kent worked seven innings, striking out nine. He scattered eight hits and two walks and allowed two earns runs. Freshman Nathan Light pitched two clutch scoreless innings of relief, striking out two. Cody Warner finished 3-3 with a triple, an RBI and a stolen base, while Nuccio recorded two hits. Don Goodes walked twice.

VMI got on the scoreboard first. Nathan Loyd led off the second inning and stole second, scoring on a Warner triple to give VMI a 1-0 lead. The Citadel had three hits in the bottom of the frame to tie the score, and brought home a single run in the fourth.

Dylan Spence started for the Bulldogs (9-15/2-1 SoCon), working seven innings with seven strikeouts, and allowing seven hits, one walk and one run in a no-decision. Cole Simpson was 2-3 with two RBI.

The Keydets (5-18/1-2 SoCon) have lost six one-run games on the season, including the last two. VMI travels to VCU Tuesday for a non-conference game at 6:30 p.m.
