Teen injured after joyride, police chase

A 15-year-old out on a joyride in the family van tried to elude police on residential Waynesboro streets, eventually hitting two parked cars and ending up on a medivac helicopter for the treatment of serious injuries.

The unidentifed teen’s mother called Waynesboro police shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday night to report that her son had taken the van, a 2007 Chevrolet, without permission. Officers spotted the van on McElroy and Short Street at 11:04 p.m. and signaled for the driver to stop.

The teen ignored the lights and sirens and weaved a path from Arch Avenue to South Wayne Avenue to Rife Road, 16th Street and then Pine Avenue, where the van ended up striking two vehicles parked in the 500 block of Pine.

The first vehicle struck was a 1991 Toyota Pickup that, upon impact, was propelled across the road, coming to land on its top in an adjacent yard. The second vehicle was a 1996 Volkswagen four-door and was struck in the rear where the Chevy van came to rest.

The driver was injured in the crash and had to be extricated from the vehicle prior to being transported by air to University of Virginia Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

Charges pending completion of the investigation.
