Let’s face it. VCU is the heavyweight college basketball program in the state of Virginia, and has been for some time. There was a time, maybe about 15 years ago, that Virginia was the big boy in the Commonwealth, but that was before Pete Gillen, before Dave Leitao, long before Tony Bennett.
And apparently, I’m on an island of one on this, but no, I’m still not sold on the job that Tony Bennett is doing at UVa. I say that conceding that this year could be a monster year for Bennett’s Cavs, who were ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll today, the first preseason ranking for Virginia since 2001.

When Final Fours seemed a distinct possibility every November, and if the ‘Hoos didn’t win a game or two in March Madness something seemed wrong with the world?
