Winter Storm Warning now in effect: 3-6 inches of snow expected

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Augusta County, Staunton, Waynesboro and a wide swath stretching from the Shenandoah Valley into Northern Virginia for early Tuesday. Snow and sleet will start between 3-5 a.m. Tuesday, changing to all snow around daybreak.

More winter: 5 inches of snow possible Tuesday

Another day, another Winter Storm Watch from the National Weather Service, this one forecasting five inches or more of snow for a wide area encompassing the Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia. The forecast is calling for precipitation to begin possibly as sleet in the predawn hours Tuesday before changing to snow through the early afternoon.

AAA offers winter storm safe driving advice

As the season’s first winter storm makes its way to Virginia, AAA urges drivers in affected areas to avoid driving until road conditions improve. “While some have more experience or a more suitable vehicle for snowy road conditions, there is no person or vehicle or amount of driving experience that can make icy roads a safe choice,” said Martha Mitchell Meade, spokeswoman for AAA Mid-Atlantic.


VDOT crews ready for winter storm

VDOT crews in the Shenandoah Valley have begun around-the-clock staffing for the winter storm that is expected to bring icy conditions through early Monday. Anti-icing operations took place Saturday throughout the Staunton District with a focus on interstates and primary roads, as well as some high-traffic secondary routes.


Winter Storm Warning: Shenandoah Valley braces for ice storm

Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro are under a Winter Storm Warning as the Shenandoah Valley is under the throes of a snow and ice storm today into Monday morning. The warning is in effect through 10 a.m. Monday with a forecast of 1-3 inches of snow and sleet before the precipitation turns over to freezing rain this afternoon.

The Shenandoah Valley is under a Winter Storm Watch that is in effect Sunday into Monday morning, with 2-4 inches of snow, sleet and ice possible from an approaching winter storm. The storm is expected to hit the Valley Sunday morning, starting with snow and sleet before changing over to freezing rain by the late morning.

McDonnell: Virginia preparing for possible significant ice storm

Gov. Bob McDonnell today encouraged Virginians to prepare for a potentially disruptive early-season ice storm that will affect the Commonwealth this Sunday. While exact impacts are still somewhat uncertain, Virginians should make preparations now for possible power outages, that could be lengthy if large amounts of ice accumulate.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Waynesboro, Staunton, Augusta County and the Shenandoah Valley through 4 p.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service is forecasting less than an inch of accumulation of snow and sleet and up to a tenth of an inch of freezing rain today.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory that is in effect in the overnight hours Monday into Tuesday through Tuesday afternoon for Waynesboro, Staunton, Augusta County and the Shenandoah Valley.

The National Weather Service issued the wind advisory to be in effect from midnight to 8 a.m. Friday. The strongest winds are expected between 4-8 a.m., with gusts up to 50 mph and sustained winds in the 15-30 mph range.
