Staunton Senior Center Local Council members gathered to develop a balanced budget at a special meeting.
On June 4, VPAS Outreach Coordinator Debbie Branham and Outreach Specialist Kathryn Coit trained eight volunteers for the National Council on Aging (NCOA) grant-funded expansion of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) outreach at area food pantries.

The Bath Community Senior Center members traveled to Highland County to attend a Senior Luncheon on June 11.
The Elkton Community Center held their annual Organizational Fair on May 22. A VPAS display with handouts was set up. Beth Bland, HR RD, Barry Elwood, ERSC Local Council Chair, and Sherry Ross, Local Council member represented VPAS HR and ERSC at the event.
The first annual Leaders in Action day was held at Price Rotary Senior Center on May 21. Unfortunately the event only drew one participant, Helen Shibut. However, Bill Greene, PRSC Local Council member joined her to deliver meals and they both had a very rewarding experience.
East Rockingham Senior Center held a VPAS fundraiser on May 20. Chick-fil-A provided donated coupons for breakfast items that dining guests could “spin to win” on their game board. Each spin cost a .50 cent donation to VPAS and every spin won a prize.
Dawn Shull, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Harrisonburg-Rockingham regional office of Valley Program for Aging Services, was presented with a “Catch a Star” award for her exemplary work during Volunteer Appreciation Week in April.
On Thursday, May 8 the East Rockingham Senior Center Local Council met at the center.
On April 17, Bath Community Senior Center members and staff enjoyed lunch at Jason’s Pizza following a morning of exercise at the Bath Wellness Center. It was a wonderful day of fun, food and friends.
Staunton Senior Center (SSC) member Laura Luziach and SSC Local Council Chair Michael Thompson spoke on behalf of VPAS at the Staunton City Council Public Hearing on the proposed FY15 budget. Both were speaking in support of the budget and thanking the City for their support of VPAS.
After nearly four months of posting employment ads for a Director at the Bath Community Senior Center (BCSC) with little to no response, Chief Administrative Officer Jenn Chestnut struck gold when Alicia Wrights submitted her interest in the position. After an interview was conducted with Jenn, Interim Director Nancy Johnson, BCSC Local Council Chairwoman Mary Susan Blankenship, and BCSC Local Council member and VPAS Board director PY Henry on March 10, it was obvious Alicia was the perfect match for the position.
Price Rotary Senior Center Local Council met Monday, March 24. They were pleased to welcome Bill Greene as a new member to the Council.
After introductions and the approval of minutes from the January meeting, SAW Regional Director Janice Gentry introduced budget figures to Staunton Senior Center Local Council members.
Staunton Senior Center’s Local Council met to discuss a variety of topics. Chairman Michael Thompson reported to members about his attendance at the VPAS advisory committee meeting earlier in the week.
Staunton Senior Center’s Local Council postponed its January meeting due to staff illness and weather. The LC will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 at SSC to discuss new Center programs, LC member recruitment and upcoming fundraising events. All are welcome.
