BACK TO BACK, THREE OUT OF FOUR: It had been 26 years since Virginia had posted back-to-back losing seasons. Saturday’s 14-10 loss to Boston College guarantees the ’09 season as the back end of back-to-back losing campaigns for Al Groh.
It’s also three losing seasons in four for Virginia. The Cavs were 5-7 in 2006, 9-4 in 2007, 5-7 in 2008 and are 3-7 with two games to play in 2009.

TAYLOR HAS BANNER DAY: Two hundred yards and three touchdowns. In the first half. Tyrod Taylor was an obvious key for Virginia Tech in its 36-9 win at Maryland on Saturday.
Taylor, a junior, finished with 268 yards passing and 81 yards rushing.
For the season, Taylor has 12 touchdown passes and just three interceptions, an ACC low for a starting quarterback.

SEWELL MOVES UP UVA. PASSING RANKS: Jameel Sewell threw for 221 yards vs. BC, pushing him to 5,086 yards for his career, good for fifth all-time at Virginia.

SAY WHAT? You can’t make this stuff up, folks. Al Groh on yesterday’s lackluster performance from his UVa. team …
“We made a lot of progress with our team today. I¹m proud of the effort the players put into it and the fight they showed. We¹ve been working for 10 months to have a performance like that. Unfortunately, though, we did some things that made it difficult on ourselves.”
Editorial comment: Thanks for getting us to remember what it felt like back in the Dick Bestwick Era. When moral victories were all we had to sing about.

PERSPECTIVE: Frank Beamer on Virginia Tech’s ’09 season …
“We’ve still got a chance for 10 wins. We’ve got some work to do. It’s not going to be easy. We’ve got an opportunity to do that, and let’s see if we can do that. We want to become the best football team we can be.”

WHAT ARE THEY PLAYING FOR? Senior defensive tackle Nate Collins on what the Cavs have as motivation with a 3-7 record heading into the final two weeks of the ’09 season …
“We just have to pick everyone up and play for pride for the rest of the season. A lot of people will say we have nothing left to play for, but we feel like we have everything to play for. We will go into practice this week and let everyone know that we have to get ready for these games.”

Sophomore placekicker Robert Randolph on motivation …
“We are going to have to rally here for the last two games, but we can count on the fact that everyone in that locker room desperately wants to win. We still have pride to play for, but more than that, it¹s about playing for your teammates.”
