Suicide prevention/awareness walk to be held at Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton

newspaperSuicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide is preventable. More than 200 people from throughout Staunton, Augusta County and surrounding areas are already signed up on the AFSP website to participate in the Staunton Out Of The Darkness Walk on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., the walk begins at 10 a.m., and the event will end at approximately 12:30 p.m.  The walk will start and end at the large white gazebo in Gypsy Hill Park.

This fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s local and national programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual rate of suicide 20 percent by 2025.

Out of the Darkness Walks are held in many communities across the United States.  The purpose of the walk to is to raise awareness and funding around the complex topic of suicide.  The walks also aim to promote research, educational programming and advocating for public policy.

The Staunton  Out Of The Darkness Walk  is one of more than 350 Out of the Darkness Community walks being held nationwide this fall. The walks are expected to unite more than 150,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts.
