Streetscape projects awaits jumpstart

An agreement between the city and the state awaiting approval by Waynesboro City Council is all that stands in the way of the long-awaited continuation of the downtown streetscape project.

City Council will consider the proposed agreement at its meeting tonight at the Charles T. Yancey Municipal Building in Downtown Waynesboro. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and is also broadcast live on Comcast cable channel 7.

Phase II of the streetscape project involves improvements to West Main Street between Wayne Avenue and Church Street. Improvements would include new street lamps, sidewalk improvements, brick pavers, landscaping and street furniture.

Phase I of the project, covering an area of West Main between Wayne Avenue and Arch Avenue, was completed in 2008.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has approved a $486,000 grant to the city to provide the bulk of funding for the project work. The city is responsible for providing a match of cash or in-kind services equaling 20 percent of the project value.
