Stout defense leads Liberty past Stetson

liberty basketballLiberty ended its six-game road trip with a 71-53 win over Stetson. With the victory over the Hatters (4-12, 0-1 ASUN), the Flames improve to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in the ASUN Conference.

Liberty’s defense gave Stetson fits all night, as the Hatters were unable to score in the first six minutes and 53 seconds of the game. During that span, Liberty started the game on a 9-0 run and never looked back.

Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz scored the first points of the game at the 1:36-mark and the Flames never relinquished the lead. The Flames held Stetson to just 23.1 percent from the field in the first half and the Hatters were never unable to overcome the 14-point lead the Flames had at halftime.

“We followed up a good win (at FGCU) with a fairly good performance tonight,” Liberty coach Ritchie McKay said. “I am jammed up a little bit with our turnovers tonight because that is not who we are but there were a lot of positives tonight. I thought our bench gave us great minutes and you can see our guys playing with confidence and unselfishness.”
