Washington, D.C., city officials are now saying that it was their fault that 27th Senate District candidate Jill Holtzman Vogel received an improper tax break on her District condominium that was reported in Wednesday’s Washington Post.
The Post noted the change in the story in an article in today’s edition, “City officials take blame for Va. Senate contender’s tax break,” in which a city official confirms that Vogel and her husband never applied for a homestead exemption on the Washington Circle condo.
The Vogel campaign brought attention to the paper’s coverage of the issue in a news release to media outlets today.
“This entire ordeal was an error on the part of the D.C. government, the error has been fixed, and I will be reimbursing D.C. for the money they did not charge me,” Vogel said in a statement.
“I want to stress, had I been given time to produce these documents, this article would never have been printed, and my good name would never have been questioned,” Vogel said.
“In these times of media attacks, the onus is on the journalists to know every bit of what they are printing has been strictly vetted and is categorically true,” Vogel said.
Vogel, a Republican, is challenging Democrat Karen Schultz in the Nov. 6 general election in the 27th.
