Stonewall Jackson House announces winter schedule

newspaperThe Stonewall Jackson House will again adopt a winter schedule, closing for most of January and all of February 2016.

Once the house and museum shop close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 31, the house will remain closed until March 1 except for three days in January when the site will be open to the general public.  The house may also be opened with advance reservations for group tours of 10 or more scheduled at least 72 hours in advance.

On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15 and 16, from noon to 5 p.m., the house will be open for tours on the hour and half-hour in observance of Lee-Jackson Day. The house museum will also be open for its annual celebration of Stonewall Jackson’s birthday on Thursday, Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Closing during the season of lightest visitation gives us a chance to do some interior maintenance that is difficult to accomplish when the site is open every day for tours,” said Michael Anne Lynn, site director. “It also enables the small staff and corps of volunteers to plan and conduct training before the busy tourist season.” New volunteer orientation will begin Thursday, Feb. 4.

The house museum will resume its regular schedule of operation, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., onTuesday, March 1, 2016.

The Stonewall Jackson House is one of three museums operated by the Virginia Military Institute, where Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson taught before the Civil War.
