Staunton taking steps to reduce vulture population

Staunton city officials are taking action aimed at reducing a vulture population estimated at over 500.

The city announced on Monday that it is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services Division to move vultures from residential areas in Staunton. Dispersal efforts will occur both on city property and on private property with permission from property owners.

The efforts will include the use of pyrotechnics and related dispersal devices including noise and light makers aimed at moving birds each afternoon just prior to dusk and selected shootings of vultures for use as effigies that will reinforce the effectiveness of the other tactics.

It is expected that the dispersal efforts will create some temporary local disturbances.
