Staunton: Citywide heavy trash collection begins April 1
Residents should place all heavy trash at the curb no later than 7 a.m., April 1 to ensure items are picked up. Crews will only visit each neighborhood once during the collection. The City does not provide a heavy trash pickup schedule, but it typically takes about two weeks to collect all items.
“This is one of our most popular special collections of the year,” said Steve Yancey, streets superintendent at Staunton’s Public Works Department. “We know spring is typically the time of year when people deep clean and purge out the clutter, so we’re glad to offer this service every April to make the job a little easier for residents.”
The City will pick up heavy trash at residences only. Apartment tenants should check with their property manager to see if they receive City trash collection service.
The City will collect:
- Furniture, including mattresses
- Large and small appliances
- Household goods
- Lawn mowers
- Yard waste, including brush, leaves and tree limbs (must be cut and bundled)
The City will not collect:
- Hazardous waste
- Car batteries
- Oil-based paint
- Old vehicles
- Construction materials

Electronics & Tires
The City will not provide curbside pickup of tires and electronics, but residents can drop them off at the Gypsy Hill Park football stadium parking lot between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.
The City will accept electronic equipment such as televisions, computers and printers that day. Residents can also drop off tires from cars and pickup trucks only. Be sure they’re off the rim. Only four per household, please.
