Staunton: City Council seeking citizen input on new city manager

Contributors

stauntonStaunton City Council is asking Staunton residents to share what they want in the next city manager.

Council will host a public forum at 7 p.m. next Wednesday in City Council Chambers at City Hall during which residents may provide input on their view of the role of the city manager and their expectations of the person who will occupy this City leadership position.

City Manager Steve Owen announced earlier this month that he would retire June 30 after 12 years in the position, and the public forum is an important step in Council’s process to find his successor.

“The city manager, like all of us who work in government, is a public servant, so it’s a valuable exercise for us to conduct a listening session with the citizens to whom we are accountable,” said Mayor Carolyn Dull. “I encourage as many Staunton residents as possible to attend the forum to assist us in the decision-making process and share their expectations for the person who will take this critical position.”

Residents will have a maximum of five minutes to share their comments, and each participant will have the opportunity to speak once during the forum. Council members are looking for residents’ general comments, in addition to viewpoints on the following specific topics:

  • What are your expectations of the next city manager as a local government manager, community influencer and leader?
  • What are the qualities that you value in a city manager?
  • What role should the next city manager play in the City’s continued growth and success?

To ensure residents have a clear understanding of the city manager’s responsibilities and next steps in the search process, Council has provided a fact sheet for citizens online. Hard copies are available in the Clerk of Council’s office on the first floor of City Hall.
