Staunton Augusta Art Center announces new classes

The Staunton Augusta Art Center announces a new series of classes for students in grades K-12.  Creatively taught classes will include basic art skills for the youngest students to engineering a quality portfolio for high school students preparing for application to the finest art colleges.

These series will be taught by veteran teacher (history, English, art, and theater) Karen Hurt, B.F.A., M.A.T., locally known also for her long involvement in community theater.  An artist herself, Karen lived and studied art and art history in Rome and began her career in art conservation/restoration at a private gallery in Washington, D.C.

All series will be taught in the R. R. Smith Center for History and Art, 20 S. New Street in historic downtown Staunton.  Pre-registration is required by calling the Staunton Augusta Art Center at 540-885-2028.


Tuesday Art Studio for home schoolers, K-4

Reflections:  From zany to contemplative, we’ll examine art, mirror images and reflective surfaces, and use them as our inspiration to create art that helps us see the world upside down or leaves us deep in thought.

Four Tuesdays, 9/18-10/9; Time: 10:30 – Noon

$60/members; $70/non-members (total for the series of all 4 classes)


Wednesday Art Studio for grades 6-9

Poster Power: Improve your next project or presentation using the techniques of art nouveau artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, American and Bolshevik propagandists, and Keith Haring and the Post Modernists.  We’ll design, paint and color posters that promote you, peddle a message, and can be artfully packed with ideas and information.

Four Wednesdays, 9/19 – 10/10; Time: 3:30 – 5:00 pm.

$60/members; $70/non-members (total for the series of all 4 classes)


Saturday Art Portfolio Studio for grades 10-12

For high school juniors and seniors who are serous about applying to art school or college for advertising, animation, art therapy, cartooning, ceramics and clay, computer graphics, design, drawing, education, fashion, film, history of art, illustration, interior design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture or other fine arts.  Geared to students attending and/or preparing an art portfolio for submission at Performing and Visual Arts College Fair in Washington, DC: 10/28, and National Portfolio Day in Washington DC: 12/1, or Richmond, VA: 12/8.  Karen’s years of experience in teaching, advising, and supporting students and their families in the college selection and admissions process makes her uniquely qualified for this series.

Students assemble portfolio materials, create presentations of their art works, and complete drawing, painting and sculpture projects, as well as begin working, or continue on-going work, in visual journals.

Four Saturdays: 9/29-11/3; Time: 4 – 6 pm.
