State Police investigate fatal crash on U.S. 340 near Elkton

policecar3At 8:28 a.m., Virginia State Police Trooper B.W. Coleman responded to a three-vehicle crash in Rockingham CountyWednesday (Oct. 10). The crash occurred on Route 340 outside of Elkton.

A 1999 Buick sedan was traveling north on Route 340 when it attempted to pass a tractor-trailer traveling in front of it. As the Buick was in the southbound lanes passing the tractor-trailer, it struck head-on a 2005 Honda Civic. The impact caused the Buick to then strike the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Buick, Robert D. Hulvey, 82, of Waynesboro, Va., died at the scene.

The driver of the Honda, Sara M. Hensley, 35, of Elkton, Va., was transported to UVA Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. A 3-year-old male passenger was transported to rockingham memorial hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was safely secured in a child safety seat.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Irvine A. Mays, 62, of Lynchburg, Va., was not injured in the crash.

The incident took place in a legal passing zone. All drivers were wearing seat belts. The crash remains under investigation.
