State Police ID driver in Augusta County Interstate 81 racing accident

virginia state policeVirginia State Police have released the name of the Amherst man who did in an accident on Interstate 81 in Augusta County on Monday.

Jeffery A. Stewart, 51, of Amherst, Va., was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene of the accident at the 227 mile marker, which was reported at 6:53 p.m.

Stewart was not wearing a seat belt.

According to witnesses, two vehicles were racing each other through northbound traffic on Interstate 81 in excess of 100 mph. At one point, a Nissan passed traffic on the right shoulder. As it tried to merge back into the northbound travel lane, the driver, Stewart, lost control. The vehicle spun across I-81 and ran off the left side of the interstate into the median, went up an embankment and overturned multiple times.

The other vehicle, only described as a black sedan, involved the racing continued on I-81.

It was discovered later Monday evening that the Nissan, as it spun across the travel lanes, did make contact with another vehicle that was traveling north on I-81. That vehicle suffered minor damage and the driver was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
