No one can fault Richard Adams for failing to make the most imaginative combinations for his monthly Variety show. April brings a spectacular array of talent from Opera and Tap Dancing to Accordians, banjo and flutes. All wrapped together with Richard’s famous audience participation sequences: “You Can Be on a Talk Show” and the “Sound Like a Cat Competition.” The April Richard Adams’ Variety Show is Friday, April 12 at 7:30 pm at WTA’s Gateway, 329 West Main in Downtown Waynesboro.
Heading the evening will be opera singer Liz Leone and the duo, OuterBoroughs. Liz Leone is a New Jersey native who moved to Virginia in 2003. She graduated in voice at James Madison and has followed her joint paths of performing and teaching. She will perform a range of songs from Italian opera to Broadway musical.
Outerboroughs is a musical duo that has recently relocated in the Valley from Brooklyn, New York. Their surprising combinations of according, guitar, and banjo along with their vocals make for what Richard calls, “a great mixture of easy listening contemporary folk.” He guarantees they are “a Great Group, Soon to be famous.”
Rounding out the musical attractions will be The Stonewall Flutes of the Shenandoah. The choir is well known throughout the Valley for its many performances at a variety of venues. The choir consists of piccolo, soprano, alto and brass flutes. Or as Richards labels them: Little Bitty, Regular Sized, Big Ole, and Great Big Ole Flutes. “If you’ve never seen or heard a flute choir, “he says, “You should come and see this one.”
Also on the program is Barbara Wimple who starred in Richard’s “It’s Never too Late to Start Series.” Her first outing on the Variety Show was her three month anniversary as a tap dancer. To celebrate having completed six months of tapping, she will do a routine to “Mr. Toothbrush and the Gumblasters” from Richard Adams’ Dr. Toothbrush which celebrates it 20th Anniversary in April.
The audience will join the evening with Richard’s participation segments, “You Can Be on a Talk Show” and “You Can Sound Like a Cat” contest. Bring your best version of a cat call and win one of Richard’s exclusive bumper stickers.
Bill Martin, candidate for the defunct Coffee Party, will co-host and reveal his plans to resurrect Dooms Day event in 2013.
The Richard Adams Variety Show is at 7:30 at WTA’s Gateway. Doors open at 7 pm. Tickets are $9.99 in advance and $12 on the day of performance. They may be purchased online at www.wtagateway or by calling the box office 540-943-9999. Remaining tickets will be available on the night of performance.
