SMAC Swimming starts long course season in Manassas

The Waynesboro Y year round competitive swim team, SMAC (Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club), competed in the Jeff Rouse Invitational May 3-4 in Manassas, Va.

This is the first meet of the long course (50 meter pool) season for SMAC.    All swimming meets, including Colleges, are swum in 25 yard pools the majority of the year, but during the summer months the swimming changes to Olympic style venues by competing in 50 meter pools.  For several of the swimmers it was their first meet swimming in a 50 meter pool.  Several commented that they could barely even see the other side of the pool.  All SMAC swimmers finished their races and overcame any fears they had competing in the longer pools.

The following SMAC swimmers attended the meet: Nick Aldridge (10), Ryan Boyce (17), Alice Elkins (10),  Braelin Fauber (13), McKina Fitzgerald (14),  Miles Fitzgerald (11), Taylor Hubbard (13), Emma Hill (13), Davis Mckellop (9), Paige McKellop (7), Cameron Murie (12), Rachel Murie (11), Ashley Painter (10), Ella Pickering (13), Clara Riggan (11), Jackson Schundler (9), Elle Schundler (7), Haley Sheffield (8), Tate Snyder (13), Kristen Wagner (12), Emma Woodworth (11), Ben Young (10) and Libby Young (13)

The following SMAC swimmers had at least 5 personal best times at the meet: Aldridge, Elkins, McKina Fitzgerald, Hill, Hubbard, Cameron Murie, Painter, Riggan and Wagner.  Painter, Murie and Riggan lead the way with 8 or 9 best times.

The following SMAC swimmers finished in the top 10 in their age group and event: Aldridge (8th  200 free), Fauber (8th 100 back & 200 back), McKina Fitzgerald (10th 400 & 800 free), Miles Fitzgerald (10th  200 free), Page McKellop (10th 50 breast), Davis McKellop (9th 50 back, 6th 200 free, 8th 50 & 100 breast), Cameron Murie (8th 100 free, 7th 200 free, 4th 400 free), Ellie Schundler (10th 50 free, 3rd 50 fly), Sheffield (3rd 50 back, 2nd 50 breast, 4th 50 free, 5th 50 fly), Snyder (6th 400 free, 2nd 50 fly), Wagner (2nd 100fly, 200free, 200IM & 400 IM, 4th 100 free & 200 back, 6th 50 free and 1st 200 fly,), Woodworth (9th 200 back & 7th 100 back) and Ben Young (5th 50 free).

The National Level group of SMAC is gearing up for a trip to California to compete against some of the best age group and collegiate swimmers on the West Coast.  All the other levels of SMAC are continuing to work on their form and endurance to be ready for the Commonwealth Games that SMAC hosts at the park in late June.
