radioThe Issues in Aging Radio show on WSVA 550 AM featured United Way of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County (UWHR) and Goodwill Industries of the Valley’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) on August 26. Frank Wilt of Verstandig Broadcasting sat in for regular host Jim Britt who was on vacation. Beth Bland, RD HR, co-hosts the show.

Melanie Blosser, SCSEP Coordinator, discussed the SCSEP program which is a federal workforce program targeted to low-income older workers. Through SCSEP individuals age 55 years and older can receive training and part-time employment to develop needed workforce skills in order to gain regular employment. Participants are matched with a community service position that fits their skill set, preferred schedule, physical requirements, desired location, and training needs. Currently 200 individuals are placed in training positions in the SCSEP service area. Some of these individuals work with VPAS out of the Waynesboro office according to Ms. Blosser.

Betsy Hay, Executive Director of United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, discussed the upcoming campaign kick-off in September. She stated the campaign goal has been set at $1.2 million. She also shared that UWHR has launched a volunteer website, Get Connected. Non-profits can “advertize” volunteer needs, fundraiser events, and special needs through the website. United Way works to mobilize the community to Give, Advocate, Volunteer. VPAS HR is a United Way partner and was awarded $27,966 in the most recent funding cycle.

Issues in Aging airs the fourth Monday of each month from 10 am to 11 am on WSVA 550 AM.
