A man wanted for shoplifting from the Wal-Mart on Lucy Lane in Waynesboro was struck by a car after fleeing the store and being struck by a car on Rosser Avenue Wednesday evening.

The unnamed 26-year-old Staunton man has been transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries, according to a report from the Waynesboro Police Department.

The PD was called to the scene of the shoplifting at 8:37 p.m. The man had dropped a stolen humidifier and ran from the store after being confronted. Employees reported seeing the man run toward the Goodwill store west of the Wal-Mart, and he was seen in the vicinity of the Batteries Plus store to the east near Rosser when the first officer arrived on the scene.

The man was spotted nearby in the parking lot of the Ruby Tuesday’s restaurant, and the officer on the scene began a foot pursuit during which the suspect crossed Rosser and was struck by a 1997 Saab traveling northbound.

No charges are expected against the driver of the vehicle, and there were no injuries reported in the vehicle as a result of the accident.
